<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I paid a home visit to my beautiful "GYPSY" and her Forever Family yesterday. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To say that it made me happy to see how happy and loved my sweet Gypsy is would be a major understatement! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can remember so clearly how guilty and sad I felt the day that Shaun and Megan drove away with the beautiful Plott Hound/mix that I had rescued from a high kill shelter in North Carolina. It broke my heart to see the confusion in Gypsy's eyes as I walked away from the car that would take her to her new life. I was so afraid that she would feel abandoned yet again!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Gypsy brought me her beloved "Monkey toy" that I sent with her to her new home. I'm glad she had that 'little bit of me' with her to help her adjust to her new family.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She also showed me (from the comfort of between her Forever Dad's feet) her NEW fuzzy, squeaky toy.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
With JD, Gypsy and Cricket now safely and happily ensconced in their Forever homes, I am now in the process of choosing the next dogs that I will rescue and re-home. It is a difficult process in that I look at hundreds of photos of sweet, sad, desperate, pleading, hopeful and hopeless dogs that so deserve a second chance at happiness and a good life. It is heart wrenching knowing that I can only help a few at a time unless I get other people who are willing to provide <b>Foster homes</b> for dogs that I've rescued, until I place them with their Forever Families. And money is always desperately needed to cover veterinary care and food for the precious souls that I am able to save! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've started a new "ChipIn" in hopes that you might be willing to help cover the expenses that each new rescue brings. Right now, I am in the process of trying to save three, PUPPIES from the same high kill shelter that Gypsy came from! <br />

All three were scheduled to be euthanized THIS WEEK! It costs about a hundred dollars (each!) to pull them from the shelter and put them into boarding until transport can be arranged to bring them to the Bluff Country. Then, of course, there will be extensive vetting once they are here. None has received the loving care that they deserve so each will need to be brought up to date on vaccinations, worming, tested for heartworm and put on preventative (if, please God!) they are heartworm free, and spayed or neutered. I'm figuring <u><i>at least</i></u> $200 per pup for all of that!</div>

It is particularly difficult for me because I get so very attached to the animals that I rescue. I also hurt, horrendously, for the ones that I <i>can't</i> save. Case in point:<br />
<br />
Yesterday, I was notified of a group of dogs, desperately needing rescue ~ or facing euthanasia ~ in the Minneapolis area. I contacted the shelter they were in and offered to rescue one of the dogs. I was informed that I could not rescue any of the dogs that were scheduled to die because I was not on the shelter's "approved" list of rescues. I offered to send my rescue policy and procedures as well as links to the <b><a href="http://bluffcountrycaninerescue.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bluff Country Canine Rescue</a></b> website, <a href="http://caninecomments.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><b>blogs</b></a> and <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bluff-Country-Canine-Rescue/175916635834174" target="_blank"><b>Facebook page</b></a>, in addition to professional references. I was informed that a rescue must fill out an application to be approved and the shelter wasn't even accepting applications at this time because it is their "busy season". (meaning that lots of dogs are being killed) I can't even submit an application until this Fall! In the meantime, a young pup that I had hoped to save, was euthanized yesterday. I sobbed for hours...<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
"Cricket" </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
in the Rochester Animal Control Shelter</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Today, Cricket (a black lab mix that I rescued in April), is leaving for her "Forever Home". Now, that is the <u><b>GOAL</b></u> in rescue. To rescue, rehabilitate and <u>re-home</u> companion animals. My problem is, unlike most rescues, in my case the dogs that I save live in my house with me and my own dogs. They become "members of my family". I do this deliberately ~ even though I have plenty of room to put dogs in kennels. I <b>want</b> the dogs to live in my house so that I can observe them closely and help them learn to be well behaved (in theory anyway!) house pets. I want them to learn to trust the people that care for them and to learn that human companionship means love. I will not place a dog in a home where it won't live and sleep in the house, so it is important that the dogs are comfortable and familiar with the 'rules' of being a house pet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHD_u5PNrdAPXIxWlgHy_YGvL3dvss3RQR7OzNI7nJeq1iijZgek459PDAvDaxTNpKYocVjNCJcW2qo6nse_0PIsjkYnPW2T_PeGRWGHYax8s6mhf8TSBsB7baEssSZHc8km3eCQ/s1600/IMG_5132-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="457" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHD_u5PNrdAPXIxWlgHy_YGvL3dvss3RQR7OzNI7nJeq1iijZgek459PDAvDaxTNpKYocVjNCJcW2qo6nse_0PIsjkYnPW2T_PeGRWGHYax8s6mhf8TSBsB7baEssSZHc8km3eCQ/s640/IMG_5132-001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I pulled Cricket from the Rochester shelter, she was extremely thin and very scared. So scared, that while in her kennel in the shelter, she snarled and snapped at me. By the time I got her home, we were friends. I had intended to keep her in a kennel for a day or two until I was sure she would be OK with my dogs but as soon as we got 'home' Cricket was so happy that I proceeded with introductions and we all spent the night together in the house! <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Over the next few weeks, Cricket blossomed. Plenty of premium food put weight on her too thin frame and appropriate veterinary care brought her to peak health. She learned to trust me and to share my attention with my dogs ~ especially Sable ~ whom she was not very fond of. It didn't help that Sable kept growling at Cricket either. A bit of 'sibling rivalry' there.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvqWGxvhVSqQqsSvXblUBXf-ZXXKQynKYwtAl5LSNCqTXl1htTK2JYltNdarl8BrNb5s1iMnW1I3rpLgUDVNEkJXljvJfDSRmXPsH7QQ2AEi-5CkYeYvT1YmN596SViE5lGNzNjw/s1600/IMG_5813-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvqWGxvhVSqQqsSvXblUBXf-ZXXKQynKYwtAl5LSNCqTXl1htTK2JYltNdarl8BrNb5s1iMnW1I3rpLgUDVNEkJXljvJfDSRmXPsH7QQ2AEi-5CkYeYvT1YmN596SViE5lGNzNjw/s640/IMG_5813-001.JPG" width="356" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cricket LOVES to play fetch and her favorite, outdoor toy is BIG sticks. Branches, actually! ;-)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bigger, the better!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR-dzb627KhANAfLRET3TrcLEjY4ZE83jAKZfS-TKzUnukRggmgnze73s8tCob2CJipiq6Kay-AXWiQFIV43l4_mIDGLTDqJdgkVNhZTrz9TmWnV_zN7CQ9WoQQXf_zVdI6nQPjA/s1600/IMG_5860-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR-dzb627KhANAfLRET3TrcLEjY4ZE83jAKZfS-TKzUnukRggmgnze73s8tCob2CJipiq6Kay-AXWiQFIV43l4_mIDGLTDqJdgkVNhZTrz9TmWnV_zN7CQ9WoQQXf_zVdI6nQPjA/s640/IMG_5860-001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As Cricket grew more confident and less insecure, she became a wonderful house dog. She was happiest when she was close to me and became one of the sweetest, most eager to please dogs that I've ever had.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The time was right to find Cricket her own family.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXgky52k_Hr28tj1ACQSdFp8u15xWqYKW0IlSTFdpHf_5kNrarge487ZBadRGBf13eW8j6QZUGH0sfAsHxrvTQWc2NjwPdztkCgf3_aLvBXuEuc2CkNo4OCxNT8lHZthZP5-3IQw/s1600/IMG_6392-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXgky52k_Hr28tj1ACQSdFp8u15xWqYKW0IlSTFdpHf_5kNrarge487ZBadRGBf13eW8j6QZUGH0sfAsHxrvTQWc2NjwPdztkCgf3_aLvBXuEuc2CkNo4OCxNT8lHZthZP5-3IQw/s400/IMG_6392-001.JPG" width="392" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It didn't take long to find someone who appreciated Cricket's good looks, athletic abilities and fun personality. We met several potential families for Cricket. It is my job to select the one that will make the best match for a long term relationship. I feel confident that I did that with Cricket.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But THIS is the hard part for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Saying Good-bye.</div>

<i><b>By Charlie Warner</b></i><br />
<i><b>Argus Editor</b></i><br />
<i>Spurred on by an attack of a pit bull that resulted in the death of
another dog and injuries to its owner, the Caledonia City Council spent
considerable time discussing the creation of a dangerous and vicious
animal ordinance last week.</i><br />
<i>According to Caledonia Police Chief Kurt Zehnder, Helen Olson was
walking her miniature pinscher along the 800 block of East Grove Street
on May 8 around 1 p.m. when a pit bull attacked the small dog, mauled it
and ultimately killed it. Olson sustained injuries to her hand as she
attempted to pull the pit bull from her dog. Her injuries required
medical attention.</i><br />
<i>The pit bull was taken into custody by City Animal Control Officer
Mike Gavin and observed for 10 days. The dog had all its shots. But it
was discovered the dog had a micro chip identifying the animal as a
potentially dangerous dog. The micro chip was placed in the dog, per
state statute, following an attack that occurred when the dog was not
living in Caledonia.</i><br />
<i>The dog has been put down.</i><br />
<i>“We need to put our foot down on this issue,” Zehnder told the
council. “I was there. I saw what happened. It was horrendous. What
happened to that small dog made me sick. We were so fortunate that a
child wasn’t involved. We could have had a fatality.”</i><br />
<i>Gavin told the council that the only breed of dog he has had issues with are pit bulls and half-breed pit bulls.</i><br />
<i>“I believe the background and the breeding of this type of dog makes
them quite vicious. This is one breed of dog I really don’t think we
want in our community,” Gavin said. “What happened on Grove Street is
indescribable.”</i><br />
<i>Zehnder said there are other cities that do not allow pit bulls. He
cited Minneapolis as one major municipality that has zero tolerance for
pit bulls. He added that pit bulls are illegal in the state of Colorado.</i><br />
<i>“People have had many bad experiences with pit bulls,” Zehnder said. “That’s why they have zero tolerances in many places.”</i><br />
<i>City Clerk/Administrator Jennifer Feely said City Attorney Tim Murphy
recommended that a separate ordinance dealing with vicious dogs be
prepared and approved by the council.</i><br />
<i>It was pointed out that pit bulls currently in Caledonia will be
grandfathered in. But, like all dogs, they must be licensed, which will
help Gavin and the local police department keep better track of them.
But no new pit bulls or half-breeds will be allowed within the city
limits.</i><br />
<i>The topic will be revisited at the June 11 council meeting and the new ordinance possibly approved.</i></blockquote>
Now, I don't intend to minimize, in any way, the horror of what happened to Ms. Olson and her beloved miniature pinscher. The truth is: what happened to Ms. Olson and her little dog is a travesty! The dog that attacked and killed that poor little min-pin, while it was innocently (and legally!) walking down the street, <b>should not have been running loose!</b> Why was he running free? Where was his owner? What had happened in that Pit Bull's past to cause it to be so viscous? And WHY was a dog that had been previously designated as "dangerous", because of a previous attack, not under supervision??? <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Although I can understand the knee jerk reaction of the Caledonia City Council, in it's effort to keep the city safe, the <b>FACT</b> is: Breed Specific Legislation <b>(BSL) DOES NOT WORK!</b> It will not keep the citizens of Caledonia or their canine companions any safer than they were last week. Don't take my word for it. Here's what the <u><b style="color: #38761d;">National Canine Research Counci</b></u><span style="color: #38761d;"><u><b>l</b></u> </span>has to say on the subject, from a video tape posted on their website. It is an interview with Bill Bruce, Calgary's Director of Animal and By-Law Services and he is discussing ineffective dog laws such as breed-specific legislation, pet limit laws, and mandatory spay-neuter, and why these broad based forms of legislation are INEFFECTIVE:

<i>As a society, we strive to create safe,
humane communities that are good for people and good for pets.
Responsible pet ownership laws help us to achieve these goals by
requiring the humane care, custody and control of dogs by all dog
owners.</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>Responsible pet ownership laws set acceptable and achievable
standards of pet owner behavior, and then hold people to those
standards. The standards should be agreed upon by all of the
stakeholders in the community. A typical set of acceptable and
achievable standards would include:</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i>1. License your pet and provide permanent ID.</i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i>2. Provide proper care, training and socialization of your pet.</i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i>3. Spay and neuter your pet if it is not part of a responsible breeding program. <a href="http://nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/uploaded_files/tinymce/SN_Partnerships_-_SN_Triangle_NEW%5B1%5D_1.pdf">A
responsible pet ownership community would never mandate spay/neuter but
provides education, makes spay/neuter services accessible and
affordable to all citizens, and implements reasonable levels of
differential licensing.</a></i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i>4. Do not allow your pet to become a threat or nuisance in the community.</i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="padding-left: 60px;">
<i>5. Procure your pet in a responsible manner. </i></div>
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>These simple rules, along with enforcement of violations, combined
with education to help create better pet owners, result in safe, humane
communities. </i></blockquote>

It is my sincere hope that the City Council members of Caledonia, MN., will not react out of passion caused by a horrific incident but that they will make an informed, educated decision based on what is good for ALL of the residents of Caledonia ~ both human AND canine. <br />

Make EVERY day </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Memorial Day"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To me, Memorial Day is not just about honoring the military men and women who lost their lives serving their country. Those who made the 'ultimate sacrifice' are remembered with gratitude for what they have done, in the past. But Memorial Day is ~ or should also be ~ about all of the men and women who are <i>currently</i> making great sacrifices in order to keep us safe and protect our way of life TODAY!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9P8yFDBtpjQ4zLpqB4sL5Bs-WXp8Wa6BJXiPZNJcXCE8Ki3uiUfbFpcmF7IPeBNsKoKgXtmToD3ZkHcTqyNP41CqLjceoZk7Is2coTkyh41Tgd0HKuSIur6yf1GOgYS9PJfCyig/s1600/KT+AND+CARTER+REUNITED+AFTER+DEPLOYMENT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9P8yFDBtpjQ4zLpqB4sL5Bs-WXp8Wa6BJXiPZNJcXCE8Ki3uiUfbFpcmF7IPeBNsKoKgXtmToD3ZkHcTqyNP41CqLjceoZk7Is2coTkyh41Tgd0HKuSIur6yf1GOgYS9PJfCyig/s640/KT+AND+CARTER+REUNITED+AFTER+DEPLOYMENT.jpg" width="510" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not only do the men and women of today's military forces risk their lives to protect our country, they give up their own personal freedom in order to ensure ours!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These photos are of my "Beautiful Baby Girl" (youngest daughter, Katie) as she greets her husband upon his return from deployment. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLQIoiUvrkKUbySBCx7O5qr8sScHIo3-Dak89V97JCLVA4wXKGIOawnAzkhPyYErO9QlQtTtH_36BJH3LckMSNb5t50KhdIX9R7ycXotp3RTtJaV8BfCaCQCmypFSUfEyNgZ11PA/s1600/KT+AND+CARTER+REUNITED+AFTER+DEPLOYMENT+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLQIoiUvrkKUbySBCx7O5qr8sScHIo3-Dak89V97JCLVA4wXKGIOawnAzkhPyYErO9QlQtTtH_36BJH3LckMSNb5t50KhdIX9R7ycXotp3RTtJaV8BfCaCQCmypFSUfEyNgZ11PA/s640/KT+AND+CARTER+REUNITED+AFTER+DEPLOYMENT+2.jpg" width="354" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can see the joy and relief that they feel in knowing that Carter is safely back on US ground!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And yet, their sacrifice continues. The Navy determines where they live and where & when they can travel. They are not free to live together at this time because their various specialties within the Navy require that they be stationed on different bases, in different states. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yet, they are happy and proud to serve their country. Even if it means having a long-distance marriage. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As the Mom and Mother-in-Law, in spite of the incredible PRIDE that I feel, I for one will be <u>ecstatic</u> when they are out of the military. I do know however, that they will never lose that sense of duty to their country that makes them both the very best at what they do. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That is why, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
for me, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
EVERY day is Memorial Day.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am beyond grateful to <u><b>every man and woman</b></u> who chooses to give up their personal freedom to protect that of the United States. They are the best of the best. They and their families are in my prayers each and every day. And whenever I see a young man or woman in uniform, I always ~ and very sincerely ~ thank them for their service and their sacrifice. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope that you do too...</div>Nancy K.http://www.blogger.com/profile/06061265740359266798noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22671526.post-84851495478499985312012-05-26T10:57:00.000-05:002012-05-26T10:58:31.160-05:00Tears of Joy....<div style="text-align: center;">

As much as I wish I could take the credit for this, I stole it off a fellow blogging friend, John, at <a href="http://disasterfilm.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><u><b>Going Gently.</b></u></a> I almost didn't even see the movement at first! It was when I started to scroll down that it moved and it quite startled me! I wish I could find one with a DOG's face!!! Thanks for the post, John! ;-)<br />

I was oh-so pleasantly surprised when the mail arrived on Monday. A wonderful friend, that I met when we shared a room at a Breast Cancer Retreat last year, sent me a VERY special gift. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicL-TNSj0kBEn23Bth2rIoVLH3jX0vlRlFWgopiUJKJOGGIZvj0E8kdY_TfpkR7R52g6lJ4UcBQ1CvYmoDmAA-s3HL2DMCDbaO74GCLvMIpc5OO5MjhJN4cx0YPyF1suZRMECxJw/s1600/IMG_6492-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicL-TNSj0kBEn23Bth2rIoVLH3jX0vlRlFWgopiUJKJOGGIZvj0E8kdY_TfpkR7R52g6lJ4UcBQ1CvYmoDmAA-s3HL2DMCDbaO74GCLvMIpc5OO5MjhJN4cx0YPyF1suZRMECxJw/s400/IMG_6492-001.JPG" width="325" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Inside the lovely little pink satin bag there was:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A beautiful, polished, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=22671526#editor/target=post;postID=3648702762794667837" style="color: #3d85c6;" target="_blank"><u><b>HEART ROCK!</b></u></a><span style="color: #3d85c6;"> </span> Along with a touching note that said it made her think of me when she saw it, and that she just had to buy it for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

There's a real long story that explains all the ins-and-outs of 'Why' but I won't bore you with that. Suffice it to say that I once again have a CAMERA and I'm happily snapping photographs by the hundreds! ;-)<br />

I'm not quite sure why it is that I seem unable to post if I don't have pictures to inspire me but I am just going to accept that as a fact and keep my camera close at hand. There's been some excitement happening in the Bluff Country since my last post.<br />

Gypsy came to us all the way from North Carolina where she found herself in a 'high-kill shelter' with a very grim future. Fortunately, a kind woman named Sylvia, recognized what a sweet little dog Gypsy is and she pulled Gypsy from the shelter and put her in boarding at a nearby Veterinary Clinic. Sylvia paid the daily board, out of her own pocket, so that Gypsy could live long enough to be rescued and find a forever home. You'd be amazed by how many wonderful people there are all across the country who give of their time, their money, their skills and so much more, to save homeless dogs from being killed because there's no place to keep them.</div>

The folks at the NC shelter had Gypsy (they called her 'Girlie') listed as a "Shepherd mix" but I'm not so sure about that. She's clearly young ~ my guess would be about nine months. She's awfully small (about 40 lbs) for a Shepherd mix and of course, Shepherds don't come in brindle. I see more lab in her and someone mentioned that the cross could be 'Plott Hound" I just Googled <a href="http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/pubsweb/symbols/sy-plott.htm" target="_blank"><u><b>Plott Hound</b></u></a> and it sure does seem likely that our beautiful Gypsy is a Plott Hound/Lab cross! YIPPEE!!! JD has kind of made us all into BIG hound fans!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gypsy has totally won us ALL over.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

There's a good reason for that: <b> I lost my camera! </b>Unfortunately, I seem to be incapable of doing a blog post without photos to accompany it! Those of you who have followed this blog for a while know that I am not in the financial position to run out and buy a new camera, so I wasn't sure if/when I'd ever be blogging again.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, my dear friend, 'Doc', took pity on my and gave me $100 to go out and buy a new camera! I'm heading for Best Buy right after I take a shower! I think I can get a fairly decent camera for that much money...<br />
<br />
I'll be back SOON!<br />

On Sunday, I took Cricket into La Crosse, to meet a family that might be interested in adopting her. Because Cricket is a dog that I rescued from 'the Pound', I don't know her history or if she's had any experiences with children, so I wanted to proceed with caution.</div>

Even though they were having a good time, we didn't let the bubble play go of for too long as we didn't want Cricket to get sick from eating Bubbles!<br />
It is a relief to know that she's good with kids.

I want to share a write up that appeared in our local newspaper last week. I am so happy with the nice job that Audrey (the reporter) did in reporting on the Rescue. We've gotten some wonderful feedback and offers of help as a result of the story as well. In fact, I will be taking "Cricket", the beautiful black lab/mix to La Crosse today to meet a family that is interested in adopting her! </div>

I always do a 'home visit' prior to approving any adoption to verify
the conditions the dog would be living in and t assess the interactions

<i><b>Special for the Argus</b></i></div>
When she was 16 years old, Nancy Krohn was grooming dogs, raising toy
poodles and learning how to handle dogs for show. In time, she became
one of the top dog handlers in the Midwest.<br />
She was so good with dogs that a local paper called her the “Animal
Thumb Girl.” Not surprisingly, 40 years later, Nancy’s love for dogs
continues through the Bluff Country Canine Rescue, which she operates
from her home in the Yucatan Valley of rural Houston.<br />
Bluff Country Canine Rescue (BCCR) is a dog rescue, rehabilitation
and re-homing facility dedicated to helping homeless dogs get out of
shelters (where they face euthanasia) and into homes where they will be
loved and appreciated.<br />
BCCR was formed in November 2011 when the La Crescent Animal Shelter
(the only animal shelter in Houston County) no longer accepted animals
from outside the city limits. Krohn, who had been volunteering at the
shelter, became concerned about the welfare of the animals no longer
served and decided she had to do something.<br />
“To think that dogs are dying because nobody will take them breaks my
heart,” she said. In the past five months, Krohn has rehabilitated and
found homes for six dogs.<br />
Krohn’s home is a haven for the big dogs she loves so much. With
three fenced acres, the dogs find a freedom they would never have in a
shelter. She does not keep them in kennels and instead socializes them
to be “house” dogs. Focusing on their natural instinct to love and be
loved, Nancy’s strength is taking in dogs “not easily adoptable” and
transforming them into suitable pets for others. Her work is inspiring
and full of love, but care and concern can’t pay for food and vet bills.<br />
Run entirely by her volunteer labor and donations from others, Krohn,
who lives on disability herself, works hard each month to find the
resources to continue.<br />
Each dog is spayed or neutered, microchipped, de-wormed, vaccinated
and treated with flea and tick medication. And then there’s always food.
Considering all the time and money put into each dog, the adoption cost
of $200 to $250 becomes quite a reasonable fee.<br />
As much as Krohn needs cash or in-kind donations of food, she needs
volunteers even more. A dog trainer in Lanesboro has offered obedience
training for rescue dogs free of charge, but Krohn needs someone to help
transport and handle the dogs.<br />
Because socialization is so important for rescue dogs, Nancy also
needs people willing to be foster homes for dogs, or even take them for
walks. She is hopeful that maybe a 4-H or school group would be willing
to work with the dogs for a project. In addition, she continues to look
for people who love dogs and would be interested in being a board
member for the organization as she plans for incorporation as a
non-profit.<br />
Currently Krohn has two dogs eligible for adoption: Cricket, an
energetic black lab mix, and JD, a beautiful redtick coonhound. Full
details of both dogs, in addition to complete information on the
organization, as well as a link to donate, can be seen on her blog

The dogs and I woke up to a very enthusiastic thunderstorm this morning. It was raining so hard that it sounded like a freight train! I know that is frequently said about what it's like before a tornado strikes but I wasn't particularly worried as it wasn't that windy out and the sky looked cloudy but "normal". It was just the rain, pouring down so heavily that it was like a waterfall!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Needless to say, none of the dogs wanted to go outside to 'do their business' so we stood in the garage, with the door to the backyard open, and watched it rain. It was actually quite beautiful! My valley looks somewhat like a tropical rain forest in late Spring!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once the rain stopped and the dogs were fed & exercised, I decided to shoot a video ~ primarily to record the incredible sounds the birds and insects make. I know. I'm always trying to get a video that captures that magic. You're right. And I will probably keep on trying! Because I love the sound so and it's not something I'm ever likely to hear again, if/when I move back into the city...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Without further ado,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I present you with :</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
OK </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lesson learned.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Quit fooling around with the zoom and stand still!</div>

I decided that it was time to update the look of the blog. Especially since we haven't had any snow for two months and the Title Photo still showed sheep in the snow. Of course, I have now wasted three-quarters of the day, playing on the computer!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0q9XJkZMUUIyfTW1stEBBzJ-Hk9-3kw8HT8kMZsleMwY0kYY_7jPyI3kVSo5ECJ6yh6k4VzJX_T9QcUKz3nzqJVLvnlnHfVZ1pxU8JkgyrB1bMnVFZhhyphenhyphen5uM_uxxuhbrPnIEow/s1600/IMG_9935-004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="350" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN0q9XJkZMUUIyfTW1stEBBzJ-Hk9-3kw8HT8kMZsleMwY0kYY_7jPyI3kVSo5ECJ6yh6k4VzJX_T9QcUKz3nzqJVLvnlnHfVZ1pxU8JkgyrB1bMnVFZhhyphenhyphen5uM_uxxuhbrPnIEow/s400/IMG_9935-004.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I chose the new photo for two reasons. First of all, because it includes Sable being introduced to Zaria's lambs. Zaria and Sable have always had a special friendship and since I do a lot of posts about <u><b><a href="http://bluffcountrycaninerescue.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bluff Country Canine Rescue</a></b></u><b> </b>on here, I figured that I should continue to include Sable in the Title Photograph. The second reason I chose this photo is because Zaria was bred last fall and I get to chose a lamb to keep! She probably isn't due until Mid-to-late May, so I've got something to look forward to!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For those of you who used to enjoy Dream's smart-alecky comments on my blog posts, you may enjoy the antics on <a href="http://caninecomments.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><u><b>"Hero's Blog"</b></u></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It appears that Hero has a similar attitude (and JEALOUSY!) problem as to what Dream had!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Do I miss Dream and Zaria?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Of course I do!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I miss them ALL!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But the dogs help</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGPrg0JQqukaFYGv6spjNWltYnSLqQWK7e0do_WLz-5TRWJs3In_xwTCztqO8FEy19dQ2RMxvdLUggeRTRSGjaq6Ez-dPRTuCgz1oW2tR-I9yPE28ekhyphenhyphenR6d7nMR0cTWGW96cG6Q/s1600/IMG_4853-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGPrg0JQqukaFYGv6spjNWltYnSLqQWK7e0do_WLz-5TRWJs3In_xwTCztqO8FEy19dQ2RMxvdLUggeRTRSGjaq6Ez-dPRTuCgz1oW2tR-I9yPE28ekhyphenhyphenR6d7nMR0cTWGW96cG6Q/s640/IMG_4853-001.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the Rescue keeps me incredibly busy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still have Kahlua and Tia Maria in the pasture, so I can still go out and sit with the sheep, when ever I want.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been doing quite a bit of spinning and needle felting. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll have to do a blog update about that soon.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Right now, I've got to go feed five, HUNGRY dogs!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
