Holiday Knitting...

'Twas the night before Christmas and all around me
There was unfinished knitting not under the tree,
The stockings weren't hung by the chimney with care'
Cause the heels and the toes had not a stitch there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
But I had not finished the caps for their heads.
Dad was asleep---he was no help at all.
And the sweater for him was 6" too small.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I put down my needle to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash.
Tripped over my yarn and fell down in my stash.

The tangle of yarn that lay deep as the snow
Reminded me how far I still had to go.
When out on the lawn I heard such a noise,
I was sure it would wake up both Dad and the boys.

And although I was tired--my brain a bit thick,
I knew in a moment that it must be St Nick.
Yet what I heard left me very perplex-ed
For nothing I heard was what I expect-ed.

"Move Rowan! Move Koigu! Move Addi and Clover!
Move Noro! Move Cascade! Move Be Sweet! Move over!
Brown Sheep, don't circle around, just stand there in line.
Pay attention you sheep and you'll work out just fine!

I know this is hard as it's just your first year
But I'd hate to go back to 8 tiny reindeer."
I peered over the sill. What I saw was amazing:
Eight wooly sheep on my lawn all a-grazing!

And then in a twinkle, I heard at the door
Santa's big boots stomping on the porch floor.
I rose from my knees and got back on my feet.
As I turned around, St Nick I did meet.

He was dressed all in wool from his head to his toe
And his clothes were hand knit from above to below.
A bright Fair Isle sweater he wore on his back.
And his toys were all stuffed in an Aran knit sack.

His hat was a wonder of bobbles and lace
A beautiful frame for his rosy red face.
The scarf on his neck could have stretched for a mile,
And the socks peeking over his boots were Argyle.

On the back of his mitts was an intricate cable.
And suddenly on one I spotted a small label:
"S.C." in duplicate on the cuff. So I asked,
"Hey, Nick, did YOU knit all this stuff?"

He proudly replied, "Ho, ho, ho, yes I did.
I learned how to knit when I was just a kid."
He was chubby and plump, a well dressed old man,
And I laughed to myself, for I'd thought up a plan.

I flashed him a grin and jumped up in the air,
And the next thing he knew, he was tied to a chair.
He spoke not a word, but looked down in his lap
Where I had laid my needles and yarn for a cap.

He began then to knit, first one cap then 2--
For the first time I thought I might really get through.
He put heels in the stockings and toes in some socks,
While I sat back drinking a scotch on the rocks.

Quickly like magic his needles they flew,
Good Grief! He was finished by two!
He sprang for his sleigh when I let him go free,
And over his shoulder he looked back at me.
I heard him explain as he sailed past the moon,
"Next year, start your crocheting sometime around JUNE!"

CLEARLY, I am insane!

FIVE dogs in the house???
I MUST be nuts!

Meet "Jill"

I absolutely adore her!

But she is a PUPPY.

ALL puppy!

Who has reminded "Cisco" that he's not all that far from being a puppy himself...

And then there is "BoGo"
(the Old Soul)

This chubby, Aussie-cross is such a sweet, kind, gentle dog!
(no, that's not a growth ~ he's chewing on a bone)

He quietly sits before me and just waits for me to pet him, or comes up and lays his head gently on my lap.   If ever there was a dog who lived to be loved, it is Bogo!

The resident pooches have amazed me with how well they have taken all of the commotion and upheaval in their happy home...

"Bellamica"

"Sable"

I am so proud of how tolerant my girls have been of the crazy newcomers!  Sable actually PLAYS with Jill and although Bella makes nasty noises at almost everybody, I have caught her 'flirting' with BoGo.

This afternoon, my realtor/best friend will be showing my house.
I know.
CRAZY!
I'll probably be sitting out in the barn with five dogs...

Five dogs really is a lot in one house.
I'll probably look to set up a couple of them into foster care until we find 'forever homes' for them.   Then again!  It IS Christmas...
And I do have THREE Grandsons...

;-)

Don't worry Meem ~ I know that I'm the only lunatic in the family!

P.S.  For those who may be wondering, Jethro has totally taken over his Forever Home with my sister, Penny!  She fell in love with him on the day we  picked him up in Milwaukee and her husband and kids now love him as well.  Jethro is one, HAPPY boy!

We owe them ....

I think that the only thing that is equal to the unquestioning  love and loyalty of a soldier is that of a dog. For that reason, among others, Bluff Country Canine Rescue will wave the adoption fees for dogs adopted by any members (past or present) of the United States Military.

Let them know the feeling of being loved unconditionally. They've earned it!

Getting into the Spirit of the Season...

We got a decent amount of snow last night.
And it's plenty cold outside.
I got the Christmas decorations out.
I guess it's time to get into the spirit of the Holidays!

Atta Boy, Jethro!
I know you're not really thrilled  with the hat and antlers on your head.
I can tell...

But you're SUCH a good sport!

Sable thinks I'm NUTS!

She refuses to relinquish her dignity!

Even in antlers and a Santa hat!

Sweet Jasmine isn't too sure about this silliness!

But she'd never complain!

Even when she's TIRED!

And THEN, there's
Bellamica...

"You can't MAKE me behave!"

Oh yes I CAN!

"Bah, Humbug!"

We hope that no matter what you believe in, you are enjoying the buildup to the Holidays and that your life is full of good health, good friends, and GOOD DOGS!

Of course, if you don't happen to have a dog, we probably could help you out with that!  If you already have a dog that makes your life more joyful, perhaps your DOG would like to make a donation to our "Chipin", on the sidebar of this blog to help us save other deserving dog, so that they too may one day bring unconditional love into somebody's Christmas!

How they Did It...

If you're like me and absolutely fell in love with the singing Brooks Brothers' Sheep, (even though I have never shopped there and am not likely to!) and found yourself wondering how on Earth they did such a good job of making it look like the sheep are really singing,

here's a 'Behind the Scenes' Look!

How could anyone not love sheep???

OR
homeless dogs???

Whomever said that money can't buy love obviously never owned a dog!
Please visit Bluff Country Canine Rescue for information on how you can find love or save a dog.

I'd hate to have ANYONE miss this...

I've seen this video on several friends' blogs but it is
 SO  DARNED  CUTE
that I just had to share it.  I'd hate for anyone to miss it!

And if THAT doesn't get you in the Holiday Spirit and put a smile on your face and a song in your heart,

You'd better...

ADOPT A PUPPY!!!

(I know.  That was sneaky!)

Buy American!

How cute is THIS???

Fellow Shepherdess and Potter Extraordinaire, Tonya, has a whole bunch of beautiful pottery that she makes herself and would make excellent, unique, American made Christmas Gifts!  I bought a yarn bowl (which I LOVE) from her in the past and I just ordered two of these adorable sheep ornaments.  She has all sorts of mugs & vases & plates, etc.  With or without sheep designs!

I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want the sheep design!

Although Tonya does do custom orders.  Perhaps I'll have her make me a DOG...

*****

P.S.  THANK YOU  to those wonderful people who have donated to my "help me help the dogs" fundraiser!  We're a third of the way to our goal.  Only nineteen more days for this fundraiser!  You can help give a homeless dog a Merry Christmas by making a donation.  See my sidebar for how to donate.

I'm supposed to be over at Doc's but I just couldn't resist posting these quickly...

Gotta run!

I'd Like to be the FIRST...

To wish you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Isn't she adorable?
I bought her at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. This is the first time that I went for 2 days ~ without any sheep. What a blast!

I actually took two classes (knitting short rows and knitting with thrums) and learned so much! I also visited the sheep breeds display. It was fascinating, seeing all the different types of sheep! Best of all, it was SO nice to see the familiar faces of friends that I've come to care deeply for ~ yet see so seldom.

And then there was the SHOPPING!
I got:

This beautiful wicker basket from "The Basket Lady". She makes the most beautiful baskets and prices them unbelievably reasonably. Of course (and this is not the 'good part')...once I had the basket, I felt compelled to FILL it!

I swore I was not going to buy any roving this year. I always get sucked in by the stunning colors of hand painted roving. But this year, I stuck to my guns! Of course, I did get two HUGE skeins of hand painted Alpaca YARN and a beautiful pattern to make myself a shawl. I do so love my shawls! It'll be my Christmas present to ME.

Speaking of gifts to me: While perusing the Vendor's barn for the 50th time to get out of the hot sun, I saw a lovely couple with a display of Books that I recognized and have wanted to buy for quite some time! It was Jack and Barbara Maloney and their TRUE tale of the adventures of a Mid-life couple when they chucked life as they knew it and headed for the Scottish Isles and a life of tending sheep! I think this has got to be a great book for anyone who loves sheep.

I can't wait to read it!! Jack & Barbara are the parents of Eileen at Knot All That and also have their own website called, you guessed it: "Life on the Wee Mad Road"

I also got extra bobbins for my Roberta spinner, three bars of exquisitly "spice" scented Goat Milk Soap, and LOTS more yarn but I'm not talking about that now... ;-)

I admit, I was anxious to get back home to my beautiful, new babies. I left all the animals under the excellent watch of my good friend, Virginia. The sheep were happy new move back over to the side pasture today and Splash and Java got to spend their first afternoon OUT SIDE in the Bluff Country.

Java was so excited that she did a little DANCE!
'You put your left foot in,
you put your left foot out,
you put your left foot in
and you shake it all about...'

Splash just ran around exploring his bright new world.

Oh yes, one other thing I wanted to share:

This is my latest KNITTING project! It's a "Mosaic" pattern and is really EASY! It's my first time doing any type of "colorwork" (I'm intimidated by anything new) and I absolutely love it. The yarn is light Musket (Alice) Shetland and Fawn Shetland, blended with a little mohair. I'll be doing much more of this in the future...

All-in-all, it was a wonderful weekend.
And I'm so glad to be back home!

CHRISTMAS,Knitting...

* All photos are "biggifiable"...*

The girls and I have been busy.

My middle Grandson asked me to make him a scarf for Christmas! It even has POCKETS! And of course, it's knit from wool from Grandma's very special flock of Shetland sheep...

Of course, if Matt gets a home-spun, hand-knit scarf, Nick better too!

Biggest Brother, Josh's, scarf is still on the needles. It's so FUN to knit! I'm using a multi-colored strand ~ spun from the lock from wool I roo'd off the neck of my ewes, before shearing, the year before last ~ and a solid strand of black. Alternating every two rows in a simple 2x2 rib. It is so fun watching the colors change. And it's wonderfully SOFT! This one may be hard to part with....

We'll grow more!

CHRISTMAS in February...

Christmas came to the Bluff Country yesterday!

Thanks to my Beautiful Baby Girl ~ who gave me a membership to a California Wine Club for Christmas! I'll be receiving gifts all year long!!

I got a kick out of the label! *click to enlarge* It's a good thing the mail comes in the morning!

;-)

(just kidding!!!)

According to the pamphlet that came with the gift...the
"Current Bargetto monthly Release (January 29,th, 2008) is 2 bottles of
2006 Lodi Carignane
The 2006 Carignane is from 95 year old Rauser Vineyard just outside Lodi. These vines are huge with arms thick as tree trunks. This is a lighter style of red wine with aromas of cherry and violets. When the wine is tasted the cherry aroma follows through as sweet cherry pie with hints of toasty oak. This is a wine to be savored in 2008 when the weather gets warmer."
- Michael Sones (Winemaker)

How cool is THAT? Thank you, Katie! I'll save a bottle to share with you when you come home again....

DREAM says...

..."Merry Christmas!"

Oblivious to the Holidays....

To the sheep, in the Bluff Country, Christmas morning is just like any other morning. They always have their friends and family gathered around.
Every day is one of peace and good will (well, almost every day).

They greet me like old friends and warm my heart on the frosty days of winter.

I still don't know how I came to be so lucky as to be living this wonderful life!

Even the boys have their safe, little niche in the world. I can't wait to see the beautiful lambs that they've sired, come April!

On the day after Christmas, my Beautiful Baby Girl (who's home for TEN DAYS!!! ) even managed to lure the goofy Goats out of their barn, for a photo shoot for her page in Face Book...

She's titling it: "Christmas on the Farm"
(her friends don't have to know that I really don't live on a farm ~ just a house in the country!) ;-) To Katie, it's a farm.

DREAM says....
"TOO MANY GOAT PICTURES! I counted!!"

We all wish you a Happy, Healthy New Year filled with Peace and Serenity and LOVE...
