Shades of Brown...

I do believe we have our very first dark brown Shetland in the Bluff Country!

Meet "Bluff Country Mystery". Mystery is A DARK BROWN/smirslet, out of Sheltering Pines Diva (fawn/HST) and sired by Kimberwood Hunter (fawn/HST). I have had a number of 'modified' lambs, over the years, and have come to expect a lot of my moorits to actually be fawn. But this is the first time I've seen an actual Dark Brown!

Isn't she lovely? Her conformation is outstanding as well! ;-)

This is a shot of Mystery with her twin sister (Fawn/HST), Bluff Country Prima Dona.

And here's one of Diva with both of her beautiful daughters!

Another wonderful color that we're experiencing for the first time is MIOGET! Meet "Bluff Country Sunshine".

It has a beautiful, golden glow. Again, one of my Sheltering Pines girls (this time Savannah) is responsible when bred to Kimberwood Hunter.

This is Sunshine next to Bluff Country Bling (Moorit(?)/HsT). Then again, Bling's dam is Bluff Country Zaria and she's SHAELA! It'll be interesting to see what color Bling ends up...

And this is a delightful hodge-podge of browns!
;-)

I may just have to keep experimenting with these 'modified' breedings!

The DREAM TEAM says...

"HEY! 'Sleeping Beauty's brown!!!"

That she is, my Beauties. That she is...

My Name is "PRIMA DONNA" and I'm Staying...

The Shepherd says I've got the cutest ears she's ever seen on a newborn lamb and I get to stay! It didn't hurt than I came right up to her and love for her to scratch and rub me.

Shepherd/Mom also says I have very nice, straight legs and perfect markings and really tight, crimpy fleece so I get to grow up here with my sheep Mom and all the other beautiful sheep in the Bluff Country! I know that it's mostly because Shepherd/Mom already LOVES me. She took this picture of me, still wobbly, running up to her for loving. ;-)

Diva made me worry, but she came through! I thought sure that Dream was going to lamb last night so I got up at 4:30 in the morning to check on her. No babies from Dream but Diva was pushing everyone else's lambs away and making that 'chortling' sound that moms make to their new born lambs. Diva hadn't passed her water yet ~ at least that I could see; and her babies were still quite high (she didn't appear sunken). I was worried about a repeat of last year where she labored for 12 hours and needed help to deliver a malpresented lamb. I fretted for a while, and then came to the conclusion that there was nothing that I could do. I didn't want to attempt "going in" to check the position of the lamb when Diva wasn't even pushing yet. I can't afford to have an emergency vet call everytime Diva lambs. So, I went back to bed. Yes, I was scared. Yes, I felt guilty. And yes, I prayed. When I got up to check again, at 7:15 this morning ~ expecting the worst ~ Diva had just delivered a very goopy, moorit/smirslet lamb with one white foot. This is the first time, I've had a non-HST lamb from an HST ewe, bred to an HST ram. Actually Diva did give me one onther non-HST, but that one was a flecket. Interesting. Then again, Diva's sire is not HST ~ he's a Moorit/Krunet (Underhill Thelonius Monk). It'll be interesting to keep track of that and see if it factors in, in future breedings...

The important thing is: DIVA AND HER BABIES ARE DOING WONDERFULLY!
Did I mention that they are both GIRLS?????

;-)

And yes, I thanked "The Shepherd". Repeatedly. Enthusiastically. Sincerely. For I know that without Him, none of this would be possible.

CHANCE says...

..."I'm staying TOO!"

P.S. Dreamer's busy ~ EATING!
(Think BOYS!!!) I Can't believe I'm saying that!

The Day After...

We're going to be OK. Thank you for all the kind thoughts and words. Although, I am still reeling from exhaustion, I am emotionally all right. I don't "blame" myself for last night, as in: "I'm a bad person and did something terrible". I know that I did the best that I could. But I did make mistakes and I want to learn from them. To make sure that they NEVER happen again.

Diva and "Dilemma" Affectionately called "Emma"

Tired girls.

Savannah had twin ewe lambs while I was at work this morning. Of course, my
camera batteries just died so I can't take any pictures yet. Something to look forward to.

One weary shepherdess, heading for bed in the Bluff Country...

DREAM says......."Boy! Mom's new medication must REALLY be working!!"

You've got that right, Dreamer.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY...

In honor of the bond between mothers and children and the joy that my children have brought into my life, I dedicate today's post to that most life-affirming of miracles: Motherhood...
My beautiful "Diva" discovering motherhood for the very first time.

The bond is almost instantaneous. Diva and her son, "Rock Star".

Here's Alice with her 2005 ram lamb "Zahara". "Harry" went on to win the champion Shetland ram lamb class, at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival, and is now a flock sire in Illinois...

Alice with Harry's sister, "Zola"...

This is Phoebe with "Flash Flood". I think Flash looks like an alpaca cria!

Here's Savannah with her daughter, "Zabrina"...

My beautiful Zaria with the handsome HST ram lambs that she gave me this year...

Alice, calmly caring for her newborn triplets...

The love between a ewe and her newborn lambs is palpable...this is Zest with Bella & Trinity.

And Zodiak with "Make a Wish" and "Dream Come True"...

Alice and "Glitter"...

Diva and "Rocky"...

I wish you all a wonderful Mother's Day. I am humbled by the knowledge that my mother loved me, more than life it self. I am grateful for the strength and courage she taught me and in awe of the way she faced life (and death). She will always be with me. And with MY children...

Pam, Ben and Katie ~ I love you more than you could ever know. And I wish for you the same JOY that you have brought to my life.

Shetland People..

Before I get swept up in the events of today, I want to take a moment to thank some very dear people. I had quite the scare, yesterday, when my beautiful little "Diva" (moorit & white, HST that I bought from Stephen Rouse, last summer) started acting VERY strangely. She laid on her side, tossed her head about, strained and then flipped over on to her back, seemingly struggling. I couldn't imagine what was going on but I knew this was not any kind of normal labor. And, indeed, Diva had been fine just moments before.

Diva repeated these acrobatics several times and I was panic stricken. I lured her to the barn (my sheep would WALK THROUGH FIRE for animal crackers!) where I gave her some NutriDrench (a vitamin/mineral/energy source supplement) and a bunch of animal crackers. Diva ate a bunch of 'cookies', nibbled on the molasses mineral tub that I give the girls the last couple of weeks of their pregnancies, and then wanted back outside. She seemed fine so I let her back out. She returned to grazing and would occasionally lay down and contentedly chew her cud. I of course, continued to be a basket case...

I posted to the Shetland Breeders List and dear Marry Ellen Kelly (aka: "Bo Peep") was kind enough to CALL me to offer whatever assistance & expertise she could, over the telephone. Mary Ellen has been breeding Shetlands for years and is the woman who first introduced me to the breed. She assured me that although Diva's behavior was not typical, it was within the range of normal for a first time mom. Mary Ellen felt that since Diva had responded so well to the NutriDrench and now appeared fine that it is probably case of Diva being a "Diva" and not liking the signals she's getting from her body...her lamb has dropped into position for birth. I felt much better after talking with Mary Ellen.

Last night Stephen called. Stephen is one of my very favorite Shetland people. He is kind and funny and generous and truly loves his sheep. Diva is the second lamb I have got from Stephen's farm "SHELTERING PINES" in Michigan. Stephen is like "the guru" of Spotted Shetlands in the Midwest. Mr. Guru assured me that Diva's behavior didn't even surprise him! He pointed out that her grand dam is "a screamer"!!! Oh GOOD! Just what I wanted to hear. I can't wait to see how Diva handles actual labor if this is how she deals with her lamb dropping into position for birth... Anyway, Stephen also assured me that I had treated the situation appropriately and wished me luck with the upcoming event...

I also got a wonderful e-mail and offer of support and advise from Bill Stearman, in Canada. Bill & I met, through Stephen and he owns a Bluff Country HST ewe: "Zha Zha Mikaela". Bill also offered his support, council and shoulder. Bill is owned by an incredible flock of exquisite Shetlands at "Willow Garden Shetlands" in Prince Edward County, Ontario. If you visit Bill's web site (which I HIGHLY recommend) please drop him a note and ask him to fix the link to MINE...... ;-)

The last time I looked out the window, Diva was laying by the big tree in the girls pasture. She never lays there.
