Happier Topics...

OK. Enough dwelling on my sorrows! It's time to count my blessings and rejoice in the wonderful life that I live in the Bluff Country.

I want to share some pictures for my BBG. Katie "bought" Lucy from me. It seems my Beautiful Baby Girl wanted to help her Mom out and didn't want to make me feel more useless than I already did so she sent me a check for $50.00 and asked if she could buy Lucy. The fifty dollars is to cover Lucy's feed and care, since she'll have to stay here with me. Do I have great kids or what?????

Happy Family

On the left is "Bruce Springstein" my Silkie/cross rooster. On the right is "Madonna", my favorite hen (Silkie). And in between her Mom & Dad is Lucy ~ Madonna's baby! Isn't she big?

I was explaining to Katie that I'm not even sure if Lucy IS a Lucy ~ or possibly a "Lucca"? Notice the red comb? Madonna and Ann Margaret both have black combs. Bruce has a red comb. Is that a "BOY thing"?? Perhaps some of you chicken experts can share your opinions...

Neither Katie nor I really care one way another, although another egg layer would be welcome. I haven't had any eggs since I moved Madonna and Lucy back into the barn with Bruce & Annie. It's sure been fun watching Lucy grow! She/he and Madonna are inseparable.

White Night says....

..."Kind of like me and "Bling", ever since my buddy 'Shadow' and the other three guys left..."

Bella says:

"I just keep getting beautifuler and beautifuler!"

That you do, Bellamica...that you do!

"A-HEM!"

It goes without saying, Dreamer!!

  1. Neat looking chickens.. Most comb colors depend on breed my silkies have the Blue/purple combs.. Most of my other hens and roos have red. Now I know what my silkies may look like crossed!!! Ihave black and white silkies. They are sooo sweet

  2. The comb colors depend on breed...Madonna has a dark comb because silkies are black skinned. However, Lucy is deffinately a boy. It's much easier to tell in "real feathered" chickens than silkies...A lot of silkies you can't tell til about 4-5 months old. Real feathered roosters start getting pointed hackle and saddle feathers, and in the photo, if I'm not mistaken, are pointed saddle feathers over his rump, right before the tail. I think silkie crosses make even better setters than purebred silkies...the cross tends to breed more "brains" into them. Not saying silkies are dumb, just that some could use more brains. Plus, silkie crosses can generally fly :) Very nice coloring he has though, beautiful. I have a few silkie crosses and they're awesome chickens :)

  5. We're so glad to see this post! I just wish I could give you a big hug and let you know all will be OK. (I keep telling myself that). I'm not sure about silkies as to comb colors. In breeds with red combs both sexes will have red. Usually a hen's will get bright when she's laying. I sure wish I could help you with the silkies. Either way, you have a nice looking bird there, Nancy!
    Hugs from,
Kathy, Skit & Bran, who decided to grace us with his presence again.

  7. I was so glad to read this post. You've been foremost in my thoughts since reading the Bad Karma post.

Your silkies are gorgeous as are Bella and Dream. Regarding Bella and Dream, I'm glad we don't have to vote on which is "beautifuller"....it would be impossible!

  8. Hmm Nancy - hard to say at this point. Most of my silkie hens have very little or no comb at all. My breed of roosters have either a walnut comb - or a very small comb.
Of course this one is a cross - so, you just may have to wait and see - that's part of the fun though.
Bruce is a gorgeous rooster though.

  9. Those are some great chicken pics! I love the one of Bruce flapping and the family shot. Well you know....there was a boy named Sue...why not Lucy? :)

Bella IS so beautiful (oh, you TOO Dream!), a real treasure. From reading all your posts on her, I have decided to consider her breed instead of a Border Collie next time I'm ready for another dog.

Katie is a thoughtful, loving daughter, you couldn't ask for better!

Glad you're back to enjoying yourself at Bluff County! Hugs! Tammy

I am amazed at your pictures, how you manage to catch the animals faces when they are at their most expressive and soulful.

  12. Bella is a beauty! How's she shaping as a sheepdog?

That was so sweet of Katie. My family have been great too and I've had "sheep money" for birthdays, Christmas and engagement pressies :o)

So glad you're on the mend... and that the beautiful Dreamer is looking well too!
